Bathroom Tile & Flooring in Houston, TX
Dead-flat floors, crack-proof shower walls, and tile lines that stay straight for decades. Our in-house tile crews set porcelain, ceramic, natural stone, and glass mosaic across Greater Houston with waterproofing done right the first time.

We waterproof before we set bathroom tile
Most Houston bathroom tile failures trace back to what sits underneath the tile, not the tile itself. Cement board joints left open, a pre-slope skipped, or a pan liner creased at the corner all end with cracked grout and hidden rot. Our crews start with a waterproofing plan for every surface that gets wet, then set the tile on a base that will not move.
We install porcelain, ceramic, natural stone, glass, and large format tile for floors, showers, tub surrounds, wainscot, niches, and accent walls. If a full bathroom renovation is in the plan, your tile work is folded into one schedule with demo, plumbing, and finish carpentry.
- Schluter Kerdi and Wedi board waterproofing on every shower
- Laser-leveled floors so large format tile sits flat
- Color-matched epoxy grout options that never mildew
Here are the tile types we install across Houston
Material choice drives price, maintenance, and how the finished bathroom feels underfoot.
- 01
Porcelain Tile
Our most-installed material. Rated for 0.5% water absorption, it shrugs off Houston humidity and holds up under shower traffic. Wood-look, marble-look, and concrete-look planks are all in steady rotation on our job sites.
- 02
Ceramic Tile
Budget-friendly and easy to cut, ceramic works well on bathroom walls, tub surrounds, and low-traffic floors. We pair ceramic walls with porcelain floor tile when clients want the look of stone without the stone price tag.
- 03
Natural Stone
Marble, travertine, slate, and limestone bring real depth and movement to a bathroom. We honor-seal every natural stone install and advise on pH-neutral cleaners so the finish lasts for the life of the renovation.
- 04
Mosaic & Glass
Penny rounds, hex mosaics, and glass sheet tile are our go-to for shower floors, niches, and accent bands. Small-format mosaics grip slope on a shower pan better than big tile, which is why they remain the code-friendly choice.
- 05
Large Format Tile
Slabs up to 24 by 48 inches cut down grout lines on shower walls and primary bath floors. These sheets demand a perfectly flat substrate and a skilled installer, both of which we bring on every large format job.
- 06
Subway & Field Tile
Classic 3 by 6 subway tile still wins in Heights bungalows, Memorial baths, and Sugar Land guest suites. We stock beveled, flat, and handmade looks so the tile feels right for the house, not generic.
Here are the tile patterns we set
Straight Stack & Running Bond
The standard offset subway tile layout. Reads as clean and traditional, and hides minor tile-size variation better than a straight stack. Good for hall baths and guest showers.
Herringbone
Tiles set at 45 or 90 degrees create a woven texture that feels custom. We cut a picture-frame border into every herringbone run so the pattern stops clean instead of bleeding into a wall corner.
Chevron
Mitered planks form a continuous arrow line without the zig of herringbone. Chevron makes a small primary bath read taller when run vertically behind a vanity or tub.
Hex, Penny Round, & Arabesque
Shaped mosaics make the floor the focus of the bathroom. We use these patterns most often on shower pans and powder-room floors where texture is a design choice and a slip-resistance upgrade.
Grid & Stacked Square
Tile set with no offset at all. Modern and architectural, especially in large format. We only recommend this pattern when the tile is calibrated, rectified, and dead straight so grout lines stay razor thin.
Why Houston Picks Saul's for Tile
In-House Tile Crew, Not Sub-Hired
Our tile setters have been on payroll for 6 years or more. No rotating subs, no quality drift between jobs.
Full Waterproofing Included
Sheet membrane, liquid membrane, and pre-sloped pans come standard. No extra line items for doing tile the right way.
Houston-Specific Substrate Expertise
We know how slab-on-grade and pier-and-beam floors move in our heat, and we set uncoupling membrane accordingly.
Here is how our bathroom tile installation process works
From material selection at the showroom to the last wiped grout joint.
- 01
Site Survey & Measure-Up
Our tile lead measures every wall, checks subfloor deflection, and photographs problem transitions so the tile count you see is the tile count you pay.
- 02
Material Pull & Dry Lay
We pull tile from multiple boxes and dry lay the field so shade variation blends. Weak dye lots get rejected before any thin-set comes out.
- 03
Substrate & Waterproofing
Cement board goes on walls, uncoupling membrane on floors, and liquid or sheet waterproofing on every shower before a single tile is set.
- 04
Set, Grout & Seal
Tile is back-buttered, set in full thin-set, grouted with sanded or epoxy grout, then sealed. We return 48 hours later to check every joint under task lighting.

Questions homeowners ask about bathroom tile and flooring
Can you tile over my existing bathroom tile?
Sometimes, and usually we do not recommend it. Tile-over-tile stacks new weight on an old substrate that we cannot inspect. We tear out to the cement board or subfloor, check for mold and rot, then build a new waterproofed base. That extra day of labor is the cheapest part of the project if we find hidden damage.
How long does bathroom tile installation take?
A straight tub surround takes 2 to 3 days, a full shower build runs 4 to 6 days, and a primary bath floor plus walls package takes 7 to 10 days from demo to grout seal. Natural stone, herringbone, and large format slabs add a day or two. We share a calendar before day one so you can plan around shower access.
What tile holds up best in a Houston shower?
Through-body porcelain wins on durability, water absorption, and maintenance. Natural stone looks incredible but requires ongoing sealing, which is a bigger ask in Houston's humid climate. For shower floors, we still use 2 inch or smaller porcelain mosaic because the extra grout lines give bare feet the traction code expects.
Do you supply the tile or do I purchase it?
Both options work. Most clients buy through our trade accounts at Daltile, Architerra, and Bedrosians because we pass on contractor pricing, reserve dye lots, and handle returns on overage. If you have already picked out tile at a retail store, we can measure the job, tell you exactly how much to order, and schedule the install around delivery.
What is the difference between sanded and epoxy grout?
Sanded cement grout is the standard and cheapest choice, but it stains and needs resealing every year or two. Epoxy grout costs more up front, never needs sealing, and resists mildew and soap scum. In Houston showers, we often recommend epoxy for the floor and sanded for walls to balance cost and upkeep.
Will you match grout color to my tile?
Yes. We offer full Mapei and Laticrete color lines, plus test cards you can hold against the tile in your bathroom lighting before we order. Matched grout makes a floor read seamless, while contrast grout sharpens a pattern like herringbone or hex. Both choices are yours, and the cost is the same.
Can you re-tile just the shower without tearing up the floor?
Yes. Many clients rebuild just the shower enclosure and leave the existing bathroom floor in place. We protect the existing tile with rosin paper and hardboard during demo, then coordinate a clean transition where the new shower curb meets the older floor. If your existing tile is broken up or discolored near the shower, pair the shower rebuild with a new bathroom floor in the same project.
Is tile flooring safe on slab foundations in Houston?
Yes, when installed right. Houston slabs shift with the clay soil, which is why we always set an uncoupling membrane (like Schluter Ditra) between the slab and the tile. That membrane absorbs slab movement so hairline cracks in the concrete never travel up into a grout line or a tile face.
