Our tile setters sweat the details under the tile

Tile work is two projects stacked together. The part you see is the pattern, grout color, and edge treatment. The part you do not see is the substrate, waterproofing, and slope, and that is what separates a shower that looks great for 20 years from one that leaks in two. Our crew handles both with equal attention, because one cannot hold up without the other.

We install in strict compliance with TCNA Handbook methods and ANSI A108 standards. Floors get crack-isolation membrane over Houston's concrete slabs where movement joints are close. Showers get sloped pre-slope or Schluter Kerdi sheet membrane with dedicated drain assemblies. Exterior installs get freeze-thaw-rated porcelain over an uncoupling layer so Houston's rare cold snaps do not pop grout joints.

  • Schluter Ditra, Kerdi, and RedGard certified installers
  • Laser-leveled substrate before the first tile goes down
  • Back-buttered thinset for 100% coverage on large format tile
  • Stain-resistant sealed grout on every floor install

Here are the tile styles and patterns we set

  • Subway Tile (3x6, 4x8, 4x12)

Classic running bond, stacked vertical, or offset 1/3rd pattern. Still the most-requested kitchen backsplash and shower wall tile in Houston because it reads clean in any cabinet color. Beveled edges add shadow lines that hide minor misalignment on irregular walls.

  • Herringbone & Chevron

45-degree herringbone on entryways, chevron on feature walls, and brick herringbone on shower floors with small format tile for slip resistance. Pattern cuts require 15 to 20% waste factor, which we account for in the material estimate upfront.

  • Mosaic & Penny Round

Glass, stone, or porcelain mosaics on mesh sheets for shower floors, accent bands, and kitchen backsplash focal points. Penny rounds and hex mosaics need epoxy grout for stain resistance since their grout-to-tile ratio is much higher than standard layouts.

  • Large Format (12x24 up to 48x110 Slabs)

Oversized porcelain tiles create fewer grout lines, which reads modern and minimizes cleaning. They also demand perfectly flat substrate within 1/8-inch over 10 feet, special tile-leveling clips, and a two-person setting team. Worth every extra step when the final wall looks like uninterrupted stone.

  • Wood-Look Plank Porcelain

6x36, 8x48, and 9x60 porcelain planks that look like white oak or walnut but never scratch, warp, or need refinishing. The Houston humidity killer for real hardwood in first-floor living areas. Installed offset 33% to avoid the step pattern that looks fake at 50%.

  • Natural Stone (Marble, Travertine, Slate)

Carrara and Calacatta marble mosaics, honed travertine floors, and slate accent walls. All-natural stone gets sealed before grouting, again after grouting, and rehashed annually. We coach clients on maintenance because neglected stone looks rougher at five years than tile from big box stores.

Why Our Tile Work Lasts

  • TCNA & ANSI Method Installs

We follow TCNA Handbook B415 for curbless showers, F125 for slab-on-grade floors, and W245 for tub surrounds. The industry's actual rulebook.

  • Unlimited Tile Source Access

We purchase from Daltile, Emser, Arizona Tile, and boutique Houston showrooms. No upsell pressure, no restocking fees, no "house brand" limitations.

  • 5-Year Workmanship Warranty

Leak-free showers and bonded floors, guaranteed in writing for five years. The warranty transfers to the next owner if you sell the home.

Is it time for new tile?

  • Cracked or Loose Tiles

Hollow-sounding tiles or cracks spanning multiple tiles usually mean substrate failure, not just the tile. Pulling individual tiles without addressing the bed below is a 6-month fix. We pull to substrate and rebuild it right.

  • Stained, Cracked, or Crumbling Grout

Aging sanded grout can pull apart at joints, especially in showers and mudrooms. We re-grout with stain-resistant polymer-modified grout, or step up to epoxy grout in high-traffic kitchens.

  • Dated Bathroom or Kitchen Style

4-inch square beige bathroom tile and Tuscan travertine backsplashes date a home more than paint color or fixtures. New tile can reset a home's decade with one week of work. Pairs perfectly with our bathroom remodel service.

  • Shower Leaking Into Adjacent Rooms

A wet floor outside a tiled shower, brown spots on a downstairs ceiling under a bathroom, or mildew smells behind a vanity all point to a failed waterproof membrane. A fresh install with proper Kerdi or RedGard is often cheaper long-term than endless patch attempts.

Questions homeowners ask about tile installation

  • How long does a tile install take?

A typical 100 sq ft bathroom floor is set in a day, grouted the next day, and ready for walk-on after 24 hours of grout cure. A full master shower (walls, floor, niche, bench) usually runs 5 to 7 working days including waterproofing cure time. Whole-house porcelain plank floors of 1,500 sq ft take 6 to 10 working days.

  • Can you tile over existing tile?

Sometimes, but not in wet areas. Floors with well-bonded, flat existing tile can accept a Ditra uncoupling membrane and new tile on top. Showers and tub surrounds almost always need demo because waterproofing must sit under the new tile, not over old. We check bond and flatness during the walk-through.

  • What's the best tile for Houston homes?

Porcelain. It does not absorb Gulf Coast humidity like ceramic, it is harder than natural stone, and freeze-thaw cycles do not crack it in the rare Houston cold snap. Porcelain wood-plank floors in first-floor living areas and porcelain slab showers are what we install most often because they hold up for 25+ years with almost no maintenance.

  • Do you do curbless walk-in showers?

Yes, and they are one of our most-requested upgrades. Curbless showers require lowering the subfloor or using a recessed pre-slope pan, linear or trench drain, and meticulous TCNA method B420 waterproofing. They look spectacular, age-in-place well, and add real resale value in Houston's aging neighborhoods.

  • Will my tile match exactly if I order more later?

Not always. Porcelain and ceramic tile run in dye lots, and the next production batch can shift a shade or two. We recommend ordering 15% overage on every install and storing the attic box for future repairs. Natural stone varies even more, so we always buy from a single slab lot.

  • What grout color and type do you use?

Default is Mapei Ultracolor Plus or TEC Power Grout with anti-microbial additive and stain-resistant polymer. We match grout color to tile, one shade darker, or intentional contrast depending on your look. For high-traffic kitchens we upgrade to epoxy grout like Laticrete Spectralock, which never stains and never needs sealing.

  • Can I live in the house during a tile install?

For backsplashes, single-bathroom remodels, and isolated floor areas, absolutely. For whole-house plank floor installs we usually recommend staying out for at least 3 nights while the thinset cures. We set up dust barriers, protect cabinets, and keep at least one bathroom functional at all times on bath projects.
