Siding Installation in Houston, TX
New siding is the single biggest curb-appeal change you can make to a Houston home, and it is also the envelope that keeps the Gulf Coast heat, humidity, and driving rain out of your walls. Saul's Home Improvement installs James Hardie fiber cement, LP SmartSide engineered wood, and premium vinyl across Greater Houston with a 5-year material warranty and a 5-year workmanship warranty.

We install siding made for Houston's climate
Siding has a hard job on the Gulf Coast. It has to shrug off 95-degree summers, 90% humidity, wind-driven rain, UV that fades color in a decade, and occasional hail strikes from spring supercells. The siding that works on a Minnesota ranch will rot on a Katy two-story in five years. That is why we specify materials proven for Houston conditions, and why we install behind a rain-screen assembly with proper flashing at every window and door.
Every Saul's siding project starts with a tear-off of the existing cladding, a wall sheathing inspection for rot, and installation of house wrap plus integrated flashing. Then the new siding goes on over furring strips for a vented drain plane. This is how the manufacturer wants it. Skip that step and you get moisture trapped against your sheathing. We never skip it.
- James Hardie Preferred Contractor with certified installers on every crew
- Full tear-off, sheathing inspection, and house wrap on every job
- Integrated flashing at windows, doors, and penetrations
- Storm claim support if siding was damaged in a named event
Here are the siding materials we install in Houston
Hardie Board Fiber Cement
The Houston standard. James Hardie HZ10 boards are engineered for the hot, humid Gulf Coast climate zone, carry a five-year limited material warranty, resist moisture and termites, and come pre-finished in 20+ ColorPlus colors. Available in HardiePlank lap, HardieShingle shake, HardiePanel sheets, and HardieTrim boards. Install pricing runs $10 to $15 per sq ft on most jobs.
LP SmartSide Engineered Wood
Treated engineered wood with a hardboard core that resists fungal decay and termites better than real cedar. Lighter and easier to nail than fiber cement, and cuts cleaner on complex architectural details. Carries a 5-year limited warranty. Runs $8 to $12 per sq ft. A good pick for craftsman and farmhouse designs where a wood grain texture matters.
Premium Vinyl Siding
Thick-panel vinyl like CertainTeed Monogram or Mastic Ovation is a cost-effective Houston option at $4 to $8 per sq ft installed. Holds color well under UV when you pick light-to-medium shades. Avoid dark vinyl on south-facing walls because solar heat can warp thinner grades. 5-year transferable warranty on most premium lines.
Brick & Stone Veneer Integration
Many Houston homes pair lower-wall brick or stone with upper-wall siding. We integrate cleanly at the sill, flash the transition with Z-flashing plus weep holes, and match new siding courses to existing brick reveals. A small detail most installers get wrong and water ends up behind the brick.
Profiles We Install
Lap (Classic Horizontal)
The Houston default. 5.25, 6.25, 7.25, and 8.25-inch reveals available.
Board & Batten (Modern Farmhouse)
Vertical panels with batten strips, the trending look in Heights and Cypress.
Shingle & Shake Accents
HardieShingle panels for gables and craftsman-style accent walls.
Why does Hardie Board dominate in Houston?
Walk any new-construction Houston subdivision from Richmond to Tomball and you will see Hardie Board on nearly every home. There is a reason. James Hardie engineers two product lines: HZ5 for cold climates and HZ10 for hot, humid climates like ours. HZ10 boards are formulated specifically for Gulf Coast heat, moisture, and UV load, with a cellulose-fiber-cement composition that will not rot, warp, or feed termites.
On top of that, Hardie carries a Class A fire rating, resists wind-driven rain tested to 130 mph, and holds a ColorPlus factory finish that comes with a 5-year paint warranty layered over the 5-year substrate warranty. When appraisers run comps in Houston, Hardie-sided homes consistently show higher resale values than comparable vinyl-clad homes. It is the material that holds up the longest and costs the most to replace. Do it once, do it right.
- HZ10 Formula: specifically engineered for Texas Gulf Coast climate
- ColorPlus Finish: factory baked-on color with a 5-year paint warranty
- Class A Fire Rating: non-combustible on all four sides
- 5-year substrate warranty: limited, non-prorated, transferable to new owners
- Preferred Contractor Status: we install to James Hardie Best Practice Guide spec

Should you replace or repair your siding?
Repair When: Under 15% Damaged
Localized damage like a tree-strike crack, a single course blown off in a straight-line wind, or rot confined to one wall behind a leaking gutter almost always calls for repair. We cut out the damaged course, patch the house wrap, and blend in matching replacement boards. Cost typically $400 to $2,500.
Replace When: 30%+ Damaged or Aged Out
Once damage crosses 30% of a wall or your siding is past its five-year warranty life, replacement wins. Patch-and-match on aged color never blends and you lose the five-year warranty benefit of a full re-install. Full replacement resets everything.
Storm Claim Opportunity
Hail, wind, and hurricane damage to siding is covered under most Texas homeowner policies. If 25% or more of a single elevation has visible damage, most carriers will pay to replace that full elevation for color match. We document, supplement, and handle the claim. You pay only your deductible.
When Rot Has Reached Sheathing
If soft boards expose rotten OSB or plywood underneath, repair is false economy. You have to pull the siding off anyway to access the sheathing. At that point, budgeting for a full replacement with new house wrap is the smarter call.
Signs You Need New Siding
Paint Peeling on Original Wood
If you are repainting every 3 to 4 years, old wood or hardboard is the culprit. Hardie solves it.
Warped or Buckled Panels
Common on dark-colored vinyl on south walls after 8 to 10 years of Houston sun.
Woodpecker or Termite Holes
Both signal that pests have colonized your wall cavity. Fiber cement and engineered wood stop it cold.

Questions homeowners ask about siding installation
How long does a Houston siding project take?
Most single-story homes with Hardie Board wrap in 5 to 7 working days. Two-story homes or mixed-profile installs with shingle accents and board-and-batten gables can run 8 to 12 days. Vinyl installs move faster, typically 3 to 5 days for the same square footage.
Is Hardie Board really worth the extra money over vinyl?
For most Houston homeowners staying in their house more than 7 years, yes. Hardie costs roughly 2x what premium vinyl does, but it holds paint, resists impact, carries a 5-year warranty, and shows up as a measurable value-add on appraisals. If you are selling inside 5 years, premium vinyl is still a solid call.
Do I need to paint Hardie Board?
Not if you order ColorPlus Technology, which comes pre-finished from the factory with a baked-on color and a 5-year paint warranty. If you order primed-only boards at a lower price, you will need to paint within 180 days of install. ColorPlus is the right call for Houston because our UV and humidity chew through field-applied paint fast.
Can you install new siding over the old?
We never recommend it. Siding over siding hides rot, voids the new siding warranty, and traps moisture. A proper Houston install requires tear-off, sheathing inspection, house wrap, and rain-screen assembly. That is the only path that earns a 5-year manufacturer warranty and protects your walls long-term.
Does insurance cover siding replacement?
If siding is damaged by a covered peril like hail, wind, or falling objects, your Texas homeowner policy typically pays. Most carriers will replace a full elevation if the damaged panel cannot be color-matched. We document, submit the claim, and handle supplements. Regular wear and fade is not covered.
Will new siding reduce my energy bill?
Modestly, if you add continuous rigid foam insulation during tear-off and upgrade to a reflective house wrap. Siding itself has a low R-value. The real gains come from attic insulation and ventilation, window replacement, and air-sealing at penetrations. Ask for our energy-focused Hardie install for a 3 to 7% drop on cooling.
Can you match existing brick or stone on partial-wall homes?
Yes. Most Houston homes pair brick below and siding above. We tie in cleanly at the sill with Z-flashing plus weep holes so water drains out of the wall assembly. Coordinate timing with our home remodeling crew if you also want to add a stone veneer accent to the lower wall.
